In June 2005 my love for travel and cultural experience was ignited when I made the decision to apply for the Camp America Scheme for the duration of my summer.
I was currently sudying at University for a Degree in Media and Print Journalism and had just been elected to be Editor of the Student Newspaper, a role I would slot into in the first semester of my final year.
The decision to take part in Camp America came about after chatting to several friends who had done it in previous years, and it was also suggested by one of my tutors. I took the time to research what it was all about, what would be required of me and how I would go about securing myself a place as a camp counsellor on a summer camp in the States.
Now, in order to work on the majority of summer camps available in the states, some form of sporting qualification, or membership to an artisic group etc was seen as desirable and the camps that required counsellors such as lifeguards, football coaches, dance teachers and arts and crafts experts were filled up pretty quickly. It was while facing this obstacle and seeing no way round it that I found myself applying to work at Civitan Acres, a camp for adults with disabilities situated in Chesapeake, Virginia.
